What is This Worth?

Last week, on one of the days on which I had planned to do something completely different, I set up a ‘donations button’ on this blog. Why? One might ask.

For two years, I had no intention at all of ever putting a ‘buy me a coffee’-button, or a donations form or anything similar on this page. I wrote for my own enjoyment, and for the therapeutic value I got out of the simple act of writing. So what changed?

Well, over the past two years, I’ve written quite a few posts on very different topics. Some of these articles may even have been useful to others. At the same time, I’ve chosen to keep the site add-free and with its own username. That felt like a vote for the value of my own writing: I believed it good enough to deserve its own, add-free home.

None of this comes free, however, so over the years I’ve invested not just time but also some money into the website.

I also feel that I’ve grown beyond the part of myself that would feel ashamed to ask for a donation. The part that thinks I am ‘begging’ if I ask for a contribution, only given if you feel it’s truly deserved and you can spare it. Or the part that would worry about what people think. Or the part that thinks I’m tooting my own horn (I’ve rather come to see that it could use some more tooting sometimes!)

So, if you feel so inclined, if you can spare it and if you can figure out how this whole website donation thing really works… I’d welcome a contribution in the costs to keep this website add-free and to give this writing the place, I feel, it deserves.

With tons of gratitude for your time!

Jorinde

  1. It’s great that you’re doing this. I believe all writers should be compensated accordingly, and I’m always interested to see how creatives fund themselves through their pursuits. Wishing you all the best with the donation button!

    1. Thank you Stuart! It’s definitely tricky as a writer, especially online, to decide on when amd what to ask. Thanks for the support!
